Sheet roofs are common on factories, godowns, workshops and many homes. Here is how to put panels on them safely.

Not every roof is a flat RCC slab. In Raipur and across Chhattisgarh, workshops, godowns, rice mills, schools and many homes sit under metal or fibre sheets. The good news is that solar on a sheet roof or tin shed in Raipur is practical and often cheaper to mount than on concrete. The catch is that the roof must be sound and the fixing method must be right. This guide covers both.
Quick answer: a sound metal sheet roof can take solar using clamps or rails fixed to the purlins, with proper sealing to prevent leaks. Check roof age, purlin spacing and wind uplift, avoid drilling asbestos cement sheets, and replace a near-end-of-life roof before installing.
| Roof type | Typical mounting | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Standing-seam metal | Clamps that grip the seam without drilling | Seam profile compatibility, clamp rating |
| Corrugated metal sheet (GI or colour-coated) | Rails fixed to purlins with sealed fasteners | Leaks at fixing points, corrosion |
| Tin shed (thin sheet) | Through-fixed rails to purlins, sometimes extra support | Sheet thickness, rust, load capacity |
| Asbestos cement sheet | Avoid drilling; consider replacement | Health risk from fibres, brittleness |
| Fibre-reinforced or polycarbonate sheet | Usually unsuitable to carry panels | Brittleness, UV degradation |
| Tiled roof | Hook mounts to rafters | Broken tiles, rafter strength |
Every hole in a sheet is a potential leak. Good installers use fasteners with sealing washers, fix on the crest of corrugations rather than in the valleys where water runs, apply compatible sealant and flashing where needed and inspect after the first heavy rain. Ask whether the workmanship warranty covers roof leaks caused by the installation and get that in writing. Clamp systems for standing seams avoid penetrations altogether.
Panels on a roof create sail-like surfaces. Wind can lift sheets and fasteners if the structure is weak or the fixings are undersized. The designer should consider the site's wind exposure, the strength of purlins and the pull-out capacity of fasteners. In older sheds, strengthening purlins or adding bracing may be needed. This is the single most important check on a thin or old roof.
Many older sheds use asbestos cement sheets. Drilling, cutting or breaking them can release fibres that are a recognised health hazard. Do not allow untrained crews to drill them. Options include replacing the sheets with metal or other safe roofing before installing solar, or using a specialist contractor who follows safe-handling rules. If you are unsure of your roof material, have it identified before any work.
| Roof situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Roof in good condition with 10+ years of life | Install solar directly |
| Roof with 5 - 10 years left | Consider replacing first; compare costs |
| Roof leaking or rusting badly | Replace or repair first |
| Asbestos cement roof | Replace with safe roofing, then install solar |
Mounting on sheet roofs often costs less per kW than raised RCC structures because less steel and no foundations are needed. The economics then follow your tariff and load. For businesses, see the payback tables in our guide to solar for shops and MSMEs and solar for rice mills. Homes with sheet roofs can still qualify for the central subsidy if they meet the scheme's rules.
Inspect fasteners and sealant yearly, clear leaves and debris from valleys, check for rust at fixing points and keep panels clean. Safe access matters: sheet roofs can be slippery and fragile, so use walkways and fall protection.
| Method | How it fixes | Strengths | Cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seam clamps | Grip the raised seam of a standing-seam roof | No holes, fast, leak-safe | Only for compatible seam profiles |
| Through-fixed rails | Self-drilling screws with sealing washers into purlins | Strong and widely used | Each hole is a potential leak; sealing quality matters |
| Corrugated roof brackets | Brackets that sit on the crest and fix to purlins | Good load transfer, standard for GI sheets | Must align with purlins |
| Hook mounts for tiles | Hooks fixed to rafters under the tile | Keeps tiles in place | Rafter strength and tile condition |
Ask which method will be used on your roof, why it was chosen and what test or manufacturer approval supports it. Request that the fastener type and spacing are shown in the design drawing.
Sheet roofs can be slippery and fragile, and falls through roofs are a leading cause of serious accidents on construction sites. Installation crews should use walkboards, harnesses and edge protection. After installation, include permanent safe access for cleaning and inspection: walkways along arrays, anchor points for harnesses and clear guidance for anyone entering the roof. Do not allow untrained people to walk on sheets.
| Item | Sheet roof | RCC roof |
|---|---|---|
| Foundations | None; rails fix to purlins | Concrete blocks or chemical anchors |
| Structure | Low-profile rails | Raised galvanised structure |
| Waterproofing | Sealing at every fixing | Sealing around foundations |
| Installation speed | Often faster | Slightly slower |
| Typical structure cost | Often lower | Often higher |
| Cleaning access | Needs walkways; roof can be fragile | Easier on a flat slab |
Mounting cost is only part of the picture. On a sheet roof, roof replacement or strengthening can erase the saving, so get the roof condition assessed first. Our rooftop solar installation guide shows how RCC costs and details compare.
Finally, ask whether your insurer needs to be told about the installation and whether the policy covers roof damage from the added structure. A quick call before work begins avoids surprises later.
Completing this list before ordering saves surprises on site and gives you a clear basis for comparing installers' proposals.
If the survey shows the roof needs work, treat that as useful information rather than bad news: fixing it first protects both the building and the solar investment, and a good installer will say so plainly.

Yes. Metal roofs are among the easiest to mount on if the roof is sound. Clamps or rails fix to the purlins or standing seams with minimal drilling, depending on the sheet profile.
Not if the installer uses the right fasteners, sealing washers and flashing and checks after the first heavy rain. Leaks come from poor sealing, not from solar itself.
Be very cautious. Drilling or breaking asbestos cement sheets releases harmful fibres. Use a specialist, consider replacing the roof first and follow safe handling rules.
A roof should have many years of life left. If it will need replacement within ten years or so, replace it first, because removing panels later costs money.
Panels add modest weight, but wind uplift is the bigger concern. A structural check of purlins, fasteners and spans is needed for any roof that is not clearly sound.
