EPC, dealer, aggregator or national brand: what each model really means for your installation, warranty and service.

Searching for a solar company in Chhattisgarh returns a lot of names: national brands, online aggregators, regional EPC firms and one-room dealers. They all quote similar panels and similar warranty slogans. What differs is who does the work, who is accountable and who is still around when the inverter trips in year seven. This guide sorts the field and gives you questions that work.
Quick answer: pick a company that is registered on the PM Surya Ghar portal for your district, employs its own installation crew, names every component in writing, offers a workmanship warranty, handles all CSPDCL paperwork and has an office you can visit. Compare at least two written quotes.
| Type | How it works | Strength | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online aggregator or marketplace | Takes the lead, passes it to a partner installer | Easy comparison, brand name | Installer quality varies; accountability is split |
| National brand | Branded sales, installation by partners | Financial backing, standard process | Service escalates through a call centre first |
| Regional EPC company | Designs, supplies and installs with own crew | One accountable party, local knowledge | Depends on the firm's track record |
| Local dealer | Sells equipment, may arrange installation | Often the lowest price | Design, paperwork and warranty may be thin |
A regional EPC company is usually the sweet spot for a home or small business, because the firm that designs the system is the firm on your roof. Our own approach is explained in how to choose a solar EPC company in Chhattisgarh.
The most underrated question is distance. A service engineer who needs a day to reach Bilaspur or Korba is a different proposition from one who reaches you in a few hours. Ask where the company's crews are based and how a fault call is handled.
| Region | Typical customers | Service question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Raipur and Dhamtari | Homes, shops, rice mills, farms | Same-day or next-day response? |
| Durg and Bhilai | Steel-town homes and factories | Is there a crew based nearby? |
| Bilaspur and Rajnandgaon | Homes, institutions, farms | How are service visits scheduled? |
| Korba and Raigarh | Industrial and commercial | Cleaning contract for dusty sites? |

Modules and inverters are close to a commodity, so a quote far below the market is buying something different. Typical shortcuts are thinner structure steel, undersized cable, no surge protection, an unbranded inverter, day-rate labour and paperwork left to you. A fair range for a 3 kW tier-1 home system is Rs 1.65 to 1.90 lakh before subsidy. Ask for any lower quote to be explained line by line.
Gupta Agro Solar is a Raipur-based EPC company operating since 2010, covering residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural solar, with a PM Surya Ghar registered vendor process that runs from survey to subsidy. Collect at least two written quotes for the same capacity and put them side by side. Make a list of every line that differs: module make, inverter make, structure specification, warranty years, paperwork included and payment terms. Ask each company to explain any gap. Then rank the quotes on engineering and accountability first and price second. The cheapest quote is often cheapest because it omits something you will pay for later.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Scheduled panel cleaning | Dust can cut output sharply in dry months |
| Electrical inspection of connections and earthing | Catches loose joints before they fail |
| Inverter performance review | Spots drift or fault codes early |
| Response time for breakdowns | Limits generation lost while a fault is open |
| Written service report | Gives you a record for warranty claims |
For large, multi-site customers who value standard processes and balance-sheet strength, a national brand can be the right choice. For homes and small businesses, the deciding question is usually service proximity and accountability. Ask any brand who the local installer will be, whether they are employed or subcontracted and how a fault call is handled. Compare that with a regional EPC company's direct answer.
Give each company a score from one to five on five questions: registered on the portal, named equipment, workmanship warranty, paperwork included and service reach. Add the scores and then look at price. A company that scores low on two or more of these should need a very good explanation before you proceed.
Online reviews help but can be selective. Combine them with direct checks. Visit the office and see whether it is staffed. Call two customers from different areas. Ask for photographs of recent installations with location details. Look for consistent contact details across the company's website, listings and invoices. Check how it responds to a technical question before you buy; vague, scripted replies often mean thin engineering behind the sales team.
If a company resists putting any of these in writing, treat that as information.
A small home system, a 50 kW school rooftop and a 500 kW factory plant are different jobs. Ask each company for projects of your size and type that it has completed and commissioned, not only the largest job it has ever quoted. A firm that mostly does homes may not have the engineering depth for a large shed roof, and a firm that mostly does industrial work may treat a home customer as an afterthought. The best fit is a company whose typical project looks like yours, with the capacity to scale when you add more later.
Finally, trust your experience of the process. A company that answers questions clearly, visits when it says it will and puts promises in writing before you pay is likely to behave the same way after the sale.

An EPC company engineers, procures and constructs the whole system and carries responsibility for performance. A dealer mainly sells equipment and may leave design, installation and paperwork to others. For a rooftop system, an EPC that employs its own crew gives you one party to hold accountable.
Neither is automatically better. National brands often subcontract installation to local crews. Established local companies usually answer faster. Ask who will be on your roof and who will answer the phone in year eight.
Check the PM Surya Ghar portal's vendor list for your district, ask for GST registration, visit a completed installation and read the warranty document. Verify claims independently.

The subsidy amount. The central subsidy is credited to your account after commissioning, so no company needs prepayment for it.
