See exactly how a solar household's bill is worked out, month by month, with an example you can follow with a pencil.

Many households install solar expecting the electricity bill to vanish, then open the first bill and wonder what the numbers mean. A net-metered bill is simple once you know the three numbers that matter: units imported, units exported and net units. This guide uses a worked example of net metering in Raipur so that you can read your own bill with confidence.
Quick answer: your meter records what you draw from the grid and what you send back. The bill charges you for the net, plus fixed charges and duties. A good system makes the net close to zero in most months, but small charges remain.
Your inverter app shows a fourth number, total generation. Generation minus exports equals the solar energy you used directly in the house.
Take a family with a 3 kW system. The tariff and fixed charge in the table are assumptions to illustrate the method; use the figures on your own bill.
| Month | Solar generation | Used directly | Exported | Imported | Net units (import - export) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| March | 420 | 190 | 230 | 170 | -60 (credit) |
| April | 430 | 200 | 230 | 260 | 30 |
| May | 410 | 190 | 220 | 340 | 120 |
| July | 300 | 170 | 130 | 240 | 110 |
In March, the family exported more than it imported, so net units are negative. Depending on the current rules, that credit carries forward and offsets later months. In May, air-conditioner use pushes imports up, so net units are positive, though still modest compared with a bill with no solar, where the family would pay for all 530 units consumed.
| Line | Illustrative value | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Net units for the month | 120 | From the table (May) |
| Energy charge on net units | 120 units at the applicable slab rates | Use your tariff slabs; net units are billed, not total consumption |
| Fixed charge | A fixed monthly amount | Applies regardless of solar |
| Electricity duty and other charges | As per your bill | Calculated on the charges |
| Total | Far lower than a no-solar bill | A small bill remains |
The key point is that you pay for net units, not for everything you consumed. Without solar, the same May would have meant paying for 530 units at higher slabs. With solar, you pay for 120 units, and mostly at lower slabs, because the slab structure applies to the net quantity.
Net-metering rules usually allow credit units to carry forward to later billing cycles, with a settlement mechanism at the end of the financial year. The details, including whether credits are paid out or lapse, are set by the regulator and can change. Ask CSPDCL or your installer for the current rules and note the date. Our CSPDCL net metering guide explains the process and the application.
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Exports show zero for months | Meter not configured for export or wiring fault | Ask CSPDCL to check the meter; keep inverter records |
| Bill uses old meter readings | Meter changeover or data entry delay | Ask for a reading correction with dated photographs |
| Credit units missing | Carry-forward not applied | Raise with the division office with copies of previous bills |
| Sudden jump in imports | Heavy appliance use, inverter fault or shade | Check the app for faults and the roof for new shade |
| Period | Typical net units | What you will notice |
|---|---|---|
| October to February | Often near zero or negative | Small bills or credit builds up |
| March to June | Positive in heavy air-conditioner months | Bill rises, but far below a no-solar bill |
| July to September | Positive and moderate | Cloud reduces generation; imports rise |
Because credits can build in winter and be used in summer, judge your system by the annual total, not by a single month. A household whose net units over the year are small has sized the system well.
| Month | Meter import | Meter export | App generation | Net units | Bill amount |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | Rs ___ |
| Month 2 | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | Rs ___ |
| Month 3 | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | Rs ___ |
Filling this in each month takes two minutes and gives you a clear record if you ever need to question a bill or a system performance issue.

The bidirectional meter records units imported from the grid and units exported. The bill is based on net units, imports minus exports, plus applicable fixed charges and duties. Settlement and carry-forward rules are set by the regulator and can change.
Fixed charges, duties and months where you import more than you export still appear. A well-sized system removes most of the energy charge, not every rupee.
In many months, surplus units are carried forward to offset later consumption, and the rules for final settlement are set by the regulator. Check the current terms with CSPDCL.
The net meter shows imports and exports, not total generation. Your inverter app shows generation, and the difference between generation and exports tells you how much you consumed directly.
Energy charges can net to zero or a credit in some months, but fixed charges and statutory items still apply. Treatment of credits follows the current net-metering rules.
