Industrial buyers ask a different question from homeowners. Not "how much will I save" but "who is accountable when something goes wrong at 2 am in the middle of a production run".

That is what industrial solar EPC in Chhattisgarh is about: a single contract, a single accountable party, and a plant engineered to sit alongside production equipment for twenty-five years.

What a Turnkey EPC Contract Actually Includes

The term EPC gets used loosely by firms that are really just installers. A genuine turnkey scope covers all of this:

Engineering

  • Load study against twelve months of consumption, maximum demand and power factor data
  • Structural assessment of the roof or ground area, including wind-load calculation
  • Shadow analysis across the year, not just on survey day
  • Single-line diagram, protection coordination and earthing design
  • Cable sizing, voltage-drop calculation and inverter string configuration
  • Generation modelling with seasonal variation specific to the site

Procurement

  • BIS-certified modules and MNRE-approved inverters from named manufacturers
  • Galvanised mounting structure rated for local wind speed
  • LT or HT switchgear, protection relays, surge protection and monitoring hardware
  • Full documentation - datasheets, test certificates and warranty papers

Construction

  • Civil works including foundations or ballast for ground-mount
  • Structure erection, module mounting and torque verification
  • DC and AC cabling, combiner boxes, earth pits and lightning protection
  • Interconnection to your LT panel or HT yard
  • Testing, commissioning and performance verification against the design model

Approvals

  • CSPDCL net-metering or captive-generation application
  • CEIG drawing approval and pre-energisation inspection
  • Statutory documentation for your auditors and insurers

If a quotation leaves approvals to you, it is not a turnkey contract regardless of what the cover page says.

Realistic Project Timelines

Plant SizeDesign & ApprovalsConstructionTotal
50 - 100 kW4 - 6 weeks2 - 3 weeks8 - 10 weeks
100 - 250 kW5 - 8 weeks3 - 5 weeks10 - 14 weeks
250 - 500 kW6 - 10 weeks5 - 7 weeks12 - 16 weeks
500 kW - 1 MW8 - 12 weeks8 - 12 weeks18 - 26 weeks

Notice that approvals take longer than construction on smaller plants. Any EPC contractor promising a 500 kW plant in six weeks is either ignoring CEIG or has not read the site conditions.

CAPEX Versus OPEX: Which Suits Your Balance Sheet

FactorCAPEX (you own)OPEX / RESCO (developer owns)

Maintenance responsibilityYours, or via AMCDeveloper's

For most established manufacturers in Urla and Siltara with taxable profits, CAPEX wins clearly because the depreciation benefit is substantial and the asset is theirs. The tax treatment is set out in our subsidy and finance guide.

Rooftop, Ground-Mount or Open Access

  • Rooftop captive: uses existing shed roofs, no land cost, offsets 20 to 40 per cent of consumption. The default starting point for Chhattisgarh industry.
  • Ground-mount captive: where spare land exists within the premises. Higher civil cost but easier cleaning access and optimal tilt.
  • Open access: a large plant elsewhere in the state wheeling power to your facility through the grid. Suits consumption above roughly 1 MW, and brings wheeling charges, banking rules and regulatory complexity.

Industrial Roofs in Chhattisgarh: Practical Notes

Most Raipur-region industrial sheds are metal sheet or asbestos on steel purlins, and each brings its own constraints.

  • Metal sheet: fastest to work with, but purlin spacing and corrosion must be verified. Rusted purlins cannot carry twenty-five years of wind load.
  • Asbestos: common on older sheds, brittle and not walkable. Needs an independent support structure spanning to the primary steel, which adds cost.
  • Fly-ash and process dust: foundries, cement units and anything near Korba's thermal belt soil far faster than average. Design for frequent cleaning access from the outset rather than retrofitting walkways later.
  • Roof age: if the sheeting has under ten years of life left, replace it before the array goes on. Removing and refitting panels later costs more than the sheeting did.

How to Evaluate an EPC Contractor

  1. Ask for commissioned plant references you can visit - not renderings or stock photography.
  2. Check who employs the installation crew. Subcontracted labour with no stake in the warranty is where quality slips.
  3. Read the performance guarantee. A credible EPC guarantees a minimum generation figure, not just that the equipment will be installed.
  4. Confirm O&M terms and pricing before signing the build contract, not afterwards.
  5. Verify how long they have traded. A twenty-five-year performance warranty means very little from a three-year-old company.

Industrial Solar EPC Questions

What does EPC mean in solar?

EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement and Construction. Under a turnkey EPC contract one company carries responsibility for design, equipment supply, civil and electrical works, approvals, commissioning and handover - so there is a single point of accountability rather than three contractors blaming each other.

How long does an industrial solar EPC project take in Chhattisgarh?

For a 100 kW to 500 kW captive plant, typically 10 to 16 weeks from contract to commissioning. Construction is only part of that; CSPDCL approvals and CEIG clearance usually govern the critical path.

Is CEIG approval required for an industrial solar plant?

Yes, generally for installations above 650 V or where statutory inspection applies under the Electricity Rules. The Chief Electrical Inspector to Government reviews drawings, protection and earthing before energisation. We prepare and file this as part of the EPC scope.

What is the difference between CAPEX and OPEX solar models?

Under CAPEX you own the plant, claim 40 per cent accelerated depreciation and keep all the savings. Under OPEX or RESCO a developer funds and owns it and you buy the power at an agreed tariff. CAPEX gives better long-run returns; OPEX needs no capital.

Can an industrial plant run entirely on solar?

Not from rooftop solar alone. Rooftop capacity is limited by roof area and solar only generates in daylight, so a typical factory offsets 20 to 40 per cent of annual consumption. Full replacement needs open access or ground-mounted capacity with storage.
